The most ancient magnificent and luxuriant temple- Erayamcode sri Mahavishnu Temple- is situated in the village Erayancode, Aruvikkara Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram Dist., Kerala.
The place where the temple is founded has its own importance. the holy Karamana river is flowing through this village. The river rises from agasthya hills, where the great south Indian Saint Agasthya is staying. the hills are surrounded with many medicinal plants and trees. From the rise of the river till it ends in the sea, it flows eastwards through this village only. And the temple also constructed facing east at the left bank of the river. The idol of Lord Mahavishnu has been made in pure black stone with four hands holding ‘Horn’, ‘Chakra’ and ‘Lotus’(left hand putting on hip). The holy mark ‘Srivalsa’ is engraved on the chest of the idol. From the manuscritors carving made on the mane stone steps in Malayanma Language has translated in to Malayalam by experts as per the request of the temple committee in 1963, it is came to know that the idol had been set upon the sanctum on AD 1185 March 7. Through the ‘devaprasnam’ led by famous thanthrik astroleger brahmin, it is found that the temple had been built mor than 800 years ago and the devine idol is older than the temple. According to ‘devaprasnam’ sub deities Ganapathi, Sastha, Nagar, and Yogeeswara, who constructed the temple. |
